Busy six days for the Wasdale Team with eight callouts
June 30, 2022
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team experienced a very busy few days for its volunteers with at least one rescue every day with two ‘999’ mountain rescue callouts on two of the days.
The rescues included serious trauma injuries, critical medical emergencies and the inevitable lost and missing groups on Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain. One of the latter rescues was on Tuesday 28th. A medical emergency on Great Gable where a walker suffering life threatening chest pains had to be stretchered and airlifted to Blackpool from the valley bottom for a life saving operation. Thanks to the Coastguard helicopters from Caernarvon, Prestwick and to the Great North Air Ambulance crews for their air support over a very busy few days. Also to our neighbouring Duddon and Furness MRT who regularly assist the team when help is needed.
It was also busy across the Lake District with a total of 21 rescues over the past eight days, 25% which were lost and missing therefore avoidable with better preparation.
Walkers and those venturing out into the great outdoors are being encouraged to visit a safety information website Adventure Smart UK. This provides information on the right equipment, weather reports and skills needed to be safe on our hills.
