50th anniversary of Cockermouth Team tragedy
June 15, 2019
Saturday 15th June 2019 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the most tragic event in Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team’s history.
At approximately 12:30 on the 15th June 1969 there was an unprecedented rock fall at Low Crag where the team was training. One team member, John ‘Jock’ Thompson, was killed in the incident and a second, Michael Stephenson, died of his injuries the following day.
Yesterday, Team members past and present gathered, along with friends and family members, at Low Crag, Buttermere, to take part in a short remembrance service and lay a wreath for those who had lost their lives.
